Perfect toys for each age

Wednesday, June 24, 2020

During the first years of their lives, children rapidly develop both mentally and physically. In many ways, toys contribute to their development. We would like to give you some tips about the right toys for each step in a baby’s and child’s life. The tips are not only useful to know for parents, they can also give you an idea for a suitable birthday present.

0 – 3 months
During the first three months, babies mainly lie on their backs with bent arms and legs. They are not capable yet to make conscious movements, but thanks to their gripping reflex, they can take things from you, like a soft cuddle toy. In this period, their eyesight is starting to develop. Toys with contrasting colours or a music mobile that also plays a lovely tune, are wonderful items for babies to look at!

3 – 6 months
Physically, the baby is changing and growing. There is a lot to be discovered for babies at this age. Movements are becoming more specific and babies are able to lie on their tummies for a while. They will have lots of fun with a baby gym or an activity mat. Baby’s attention is more and more drawn to sounds. A rattle or crinkle toy are perfect toys for this life stage.

6 – 12 months
The motor skills of babies aged 6 months and over are developing really fast. They become more and more aware of their own body and what it can do. Children of this age will roll over, start to crawl, stand up or perhaps even walk! Toys that attract the attention in this life stage are toys with different colours and structures. A soft activity cube or buggy booklet, for example, are toys that offer lots of things to explore.

1 – 2 years
When they’ve reached the first-year mark, most children are able to walk by themselves, although they may need some help from time to time. To stimulate the development of balance, a wooden push cart is perfect. At this age, children are capable of making simple puzzles or stacking towers. Playing with blocks in different shapes improves their eye-hand coordination. Items like the block train or the wooden activity cube are great at this life stage.

2 - 3 years
As soon as children reach the toddler age, they will definitely show their preferences in toys. For example, they may be interested in cars, animals or dolls. Children in this age category can hold their attention longer and they love you to read them a story. This is also a good way to build their vocabulary.

3 – 4 years
At this stage of life, children know what they are able to do and they love to imitate everything they see in the world around them. In their own wooden kitchen they can imitate mommy or daddy in their daily behaviour. Role play, such as playing mothers and fathers or doctors and nurses, is an important part of their development. The doll’s house, with its endless possibilities, will surely become a favourite toy at this age.
